Huambo — At least 1,054 students have graduated from central Huambo province-based Universidade José Eduardo dos Santos (UJES) since the institution was launched in 2009.

The information was released on Tuesday in Huambo by the UJES vice chancellor for scientific affairs and post-graduate courses, Virginia Maria Abrunhosa Lacerda Quartin.

According to the official, the number of graduates is significant, but is still far from responding to the needs.

The UJES was founded in 2009, as part of the Government’s effort to reorganise the public higher education network and resizing of the Agostinho Neto University, until then the only public such institution in the country.

The university that covers the provinces of Huambo, Bié and Moxico runs 33 undergraduate courses and this academic year has 12,240 students enrolled.

The Universidade José Eduardo dos Santos is served by 600 teachers, 300 foreigners, and also offers Masters programmes in the areas of natural resources, food technology, law and economics.
