Universidad Abierta de Tanzania construye campus en Kisongo

Resumen: Cerca de 100.000 inscritos en los distintos núcleos de aprendizaje a distancia en la Universidad Abierta de Tanzania es el saldo positivo de la experiencia que se despliega a lo largo y ancho de este país de África Central. Fundada en 1992 mediante decreto del Parlamento, la Universidad Abierta de Tanzania ha cosechado grandes logros y actualmente la experiencia se expande hacia otros países como Kenia, Ruanda, Namibia, Uganda y Malawi.

The Open University of Tanzania has acquired two plots at Kisongo on which the OUT regional headquarters and Arusha Campus are to be established, it was learnt here last weekend.

It will ease the students the burden of hiring exams centres, because once OUT gets the title deed for the land, the area can be developed into a modern campus which will cater for ,all needs,” said Deputy Director of the Open University, Mr Marcel Masalu. He said the construction project awaits green light from the national offices in Dar-es-Salaam.

The don added that previously students used to hire the Arusha Technical College halls during tests but now they are relying on make shift tented auditorium recently set up at the cost of 48 million/- on the open spaces adjacent to the Open University offices.

Officiating the 29th Graduation Ceremony for the country’s Higher Education Institute of distance learning, the OUT Deputy Director Mr Marcel Masalu revealed further that at the moment  3970 Open  University students have  graduated from its Arusha module in the past 15 years in addition to the 310 who graduated  last week.

The distance learning public university has nearly 900 students at its Arusha branch. It has so far enrolled nearly 100,000 students countrywide with more than 20,000 of them having graduated. The  Open University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1992.

The Open University has recorded great achievements, including establishing learning and exam centres in practically all regions of the mainland Tanzania as well as Zanzibar. It has also established branches  in other countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Namibia, Uganda and Malawi.

With its headquarters in Dar-es-Salaam the OUT offers certificate, diploma and degree courses through distance learning.
Masalu, also pointed out that the Arusha region’s OUT branch has spearheaded the efforts of rural area expansion through the setting up of two new district centres at the Karatu and Longido District Councils.
