China mulls family education law

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) — Chinese lawmakers are considering a family education law, proposing that parents or other guardians of minors shall not commit violence in family education.

A draft of the legislation was presented on Wednesday to the ongoing session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature, for the first reading.

When educating minors, parents or guardians shall not discriminate against minors due to their gender or physical condition, commit violence, or coerce them into criminal acts or social immorality, according to the draft.

Parents or other guardians bear primary responsibility in educating children, the draft says, adding that they shall learn knowledge about family education to enhance capabilities in this regard.

The draft also stipulates the responsibilities and duties of the government, schools and other sectors in improving family education. Enditem
