EEUU: DPI announces expanded partnership for tech education in state’s schools

An expanded partnership with Microsoft Corporation to bring a technology program to the state’s schools has been announced by North Dakota School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler.

Baesler, the head of the Department of Public Instruction, is gauging interest from superintendents and high schools in using a unique program for computer science instruction, she said in a news release.

Microsoft will be expanding its Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) program to the state by hiring a full-time, North Dakota-based coordinator, volunteering some of its employees and expert instructors as classroom teachers and exploring further investment to expand this program for high school students, Baesler said.

In the TEALS program, a volunteer computer science professional from Microsoft or another industry partner teams up with a classroom instructor to team-teach computer science courses. The classroom teacher gradually takes over instruction as she or he gains knowledge of the subject.

Hillsboro High School is the only North Dakota high school with a Microsoft TEALS program, but Baesler said she hopes the program will catch with many other schools.

Forty teams of 9- to 14-year-olds from around the area are expected to participate in the North Dakota FIRST LEGO League Robotics State Championship tournament Saturday at the UND Memorial Union. «FIRST» stands for «For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.»

At the event, students compete using science, engineering and technology skills to solve real-world problems. This year’s focus is hydro-dynamics—how to find, transport, use or dispose of water.

The competition, held annually at UND, is open to the public.

Grand Forks Public Schools has received $5,000 from the Russell and Helen Sand Public High School Education Fund, the school district announced.

A competitive grant for $2,500 has been awarded for the purchase of a digital monitor and software to help students design and create digital signage in graphic arts classes at Central High School.

Students will use the equipment to design and create posters promoting events, classes and school information for display on the monitors.

With the second $2,500 grant, the school district has purchased a geriatric simulator that allows students to experience some of the physical changes that can occur with aging and the challenges the elderly face in confronting those changes.

The simulator mimics vision impairment, restricted range of motion and decreased mobility and strength, loss of sensation and changes in balance.

«I tell my students that anytime we can step into our patients’ shoes and get a sense of the challenges they face, it allows us to be more empathetic in the care we give,» Kim Adams, medical careers instructor at Central High School, said in a news release.

Holy Family-St. Mary’s Catholic School hosts its 13th Annual Dinner, Dance and Auction on Friday at the Ramada Inn in Grand Forks.

Dubbed the «Written in the Stars Prom 2018,» the event begins at 5:45 p.m. The buffet is served at 6:30 p.m., and the dance is at 8:30 p.m.

Microsoft pushes for more practical approach to education in Ghana

American technology company, Microsoft has organised an education leaders event in Accra to address the digital transformation of education across the globe.

The event, supported by Zepto Ghana Ltd, Point of View and Africa Schools Online, brought together Heads of Institutions, Directors of IT, Teachers and actors in the education sector to appreciate how Microsoft’s latest technologies and education tools can help institutions save money, attract students, and aid teaching and learning globally.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, an education director of Microsoft in the Middle East, Jaye Richard Mills, said it was vital that educational institutions employ ‘real-world’ teaching and learning methods in order for the youth to better translate what they study into their daily lives.

“I think the challenge as students is that you come into university or college expecting it to be reflective of the life that you live outside, and what you very often find [that isn’t the case]. We need to make better connections between education and real life outside,” she said.

“So I think the purpose of today is to talk about windows and Microsoft in education, and what Microsoft is doing around the world to encourage the grown of the skills driven agenda in our schools and universities.”

According to her, the world had shifted from knowledge acquisition to a greater focus on skills and capacity development.

“[There’s] a fundamental shift from pure knowledge and acquisition to very much skill for 21st-century life. The skill that you need to take your place in the 21st-century information age, are the types of skills that you need to acquire during education.”

The event saw the unveiling of some new software like Microsoft 365 Education, which combines the essentials of the Windows 10 platform all within a simplified licensing framework for better and easy learning, Office 365 for productivity and collaboration and Enterprise Mobility Suite for security and management.

Jaye Richard Mills also said the programs are meant to better education and equip the young to be able to face and adapt to the technological age, which is at the heart of Microsoft.

“Microsoft is about supporting educators, and supporting them on a journey to improving their skills, and we do that through the various programs that we have for training which you will find on our Microsoft.com/education site, and also in the teams that we have working around the world to develop our software.

“So for Microsoft this is very much about supporting educators to deliver quality education that speaks for purposes in this 21 century information age,” she added.

Ghana: Las 7 lecciones del mejor profesor del mundo

Dejó su trabajo en Microsoft para perseguir el sueño de crear una universidad en su país. Hoy su modelo educativo es un ejemplo.

Patrick Awuah es un ingeniero ghanés, de 52 años, elegido el pasado miércoles como el mejor profesor del mundo en la Cumbre Mundial para la Innovación en Educación celebrada en Doha, capital de Catar. El Premio WISE, por sus siglas en inglés, es considerado uno de los galardones educativos más importantes del mundo junto con el Global Teacher Prize, que entrega cada año en Dubai, Emiratos Arabes Unidos, la Fundación Varkey.

Estas son las 7 lecciones que deja Awuah con su ejemplo de vida y también con su labor al frente de la Universidad de Ashesi, ubicada en cercanías a Accra, la capital ghanesa.

1. El pensamiento crítico debe prevalecer sobre el aprendizaje de memoria: para Awuah lo más importante es que los alumnos aprendan a pensar por sí mismos, superando los procedimientos tradicionales para adquirir conocimientos de memoria. Todos los programas ofrecidos incentivan a los estudiantes a cuestionar lo establecido, para que no se limiten a reproducir lo que les cuentan los profesores sin dudar de su veracidad.

2. La evaluación continua es más importante que los exámenes finales: un elemento diferenciador del método de Awuah frente a otras universidades de Ghana es que el examen final representa solo un porcentaje menor de la nota. Allí se da mucha más importancia al proceso de aprendizaje a través de proyectos que preparan los alumnos para la práctica profesional, y su evaluación se hace de forma continua.

3. La empatía es igual de importante al conocimiento: en la Universidad de Ashesi todos los estudiantes participan durante cuatro años en un seminario de liderazgo sobre ética, colaboración y espíritu empresarial que termina con una sección de aprendizaje con base en el servicio. Esto incentiva el respeto por las opiniones contrarias y la capacidad de identificación de los estudiantes con los habitantes del territorio y sus problemáticas.

4. “Las humanidades son la clave para formar a los líderes del futuro”: con esta frase Awuah afirma que sus estudiantes deben ser capaces de plantearse grandes preguntas sobre cómo construir una sociedad mejor, antes que cómo convertirse en altos ejecutivos. Está muy ligada a su visión ética de la educación y por eso destaca que en 2008 los estudiantes establecieron el primer código de honor de una universidad africana, con el cual se responsabilizan de todos sus comportamientos, como respuesta al problema de la corrupción.

5. Hacer prevalecer la ética sobre el desarrollo económico personal también paga: el sector privado ha aportado con becas para el 50 por ciento de los estudiantes de la Universidad, 20 por ciento totales y 30 por ciento parciales, que ayudan a cubrir los 9.000 dólares que cuesta la matrícula anual. Además, uno de los principales criterios del jurado para otorgar el reconocimiento de medio millón de dólares a Awuah por ser el mejor profesor, fue premiar emprendimientos que no se basen solo en el desarrollo económico, sino que cultiven la altura moral de los ciudadanos.

6. Perseguir los sueños es más importante que la estabilidad: Awuah renunció a su cargo en Microsoft porque su sueño siempre fue montar una universidad en su país natal. Pidió ayuda al sector privado y con todos sus ahorros y los de su mujer reunieron un capital de 2,5 millones de dólares. Aunque los inicios fueron difíciles y modestos, porque empezaron dando clase a 30 estudiantes en una casa alquilada, hoy la universidad alberga 600 alumnos en un campus de cerca de 100 hectáreas.

7. Enseñar con el ejemplo es más efectivo: lo primero que hará Awuah con el medio millón de dólares recibido por el premio será incrementar las becas para estudiantes de la universidad. Lecciones como esta son producto de la filosofía humanística que inspira este modelo académico, y por eso hay casos de estudiantes con negocios exitosos, que también han donado parte de sus utilidades para el desarrollo de proyectos que benefician a comunidades en Ghana.

Los alumnos de la Institución Educativa José Asunción Silva de Medellín recogen imágenes, entrevistas y videos para enseñarles a estudiantes de países como Chile, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, México, Ecuador, Estados Unidos, Malasia e India quiénes son, qué piensan, en qué creen, qué comen, cómo viven, cómo es su ciudad y su país; a la vez, ellos reciben sus testimonios y así aprenden todos al tiempo. Para eso usan los computadores del colegio, las aulas virtuales, Skype y OneNote como parte del programa Amigos sin fronteras que la profesora Katerine Franco se inventó para acercar a los jóvenes a la tecnología y aprovechar esta en la educación.

Casos como estos son los que le gusta mostrar por todo el mundo a Anthony Salcito, vicepresidente mundial de educación de Microsoft, quien estuvo en Virtual Educa, evento sobre innovación educativa en Colombia.

¿En el mundo se está haciendo bien la unión entre tecnología y educación?

Sí, cada vez más hay más involucramiento, muchos dicen que no lo suficientemente rápido, pero yo tengo una perspectiva más optimista. Muchas escuelas se están adaptando en la medida de sus posibilidades. Reconozco y celebro que el aprendizaje ha tenido un cambio fundamental (no solo en las escuelas), en la forma como aprendemos por la disponibilidad de internet, de celulares y el acceso a la información.

¿Cómo está Colombia en este campo?
​
Está emergiendo como líder en América Latina. Las inversiones en tecnología y la investigación en aprendizaje están tomando lugar. Pero sí debemos seguir siendo más ambiciosos. En un tiempo de paz, de inversión en la educación, es una responsabilidad de los líderes de la educación y de los maestros inspirar y generar resultados para posicionar al país como líder de la región y mundial de innovación educativa.

No es tecnología por tecnología, sino que esta mejore la eficiencia, la seguridad y tenga mayor costo-beneficio

¿Cómo deben adaptarse las escuelas a estos cambios?

La reformulación del aprendizaje ya empezó en nuestra sociedad. Cuando yo iba a la escuela solo había un texto de libro escrito por un autor. Ahora existe la posibilidad de tener diferentes perspectivas desde distintos lados. Los educadores deben enseñar cómo usar esa información. También debemos ver lo que piden los empleadores, muchos buscan cambios urgentes en la educación. Necesitan empleados con más habilidades de manejo tecnológico.

Entonces, la relación entre tecnología y educación no se trata solo en entregar dispositivos tecnológicos…
​
Exacto, cada inversión en tecnología debe estar conectada con resultados de aprendizaje. No es tecnología por tecnología, sino que esta mejore la eficiencia, la seguridad y tenga mayor costo-beneficio. Podemos estar orgullosos de nuestra tecnología, de nuestros laboratorios de computadores, etc., pero eso no tiene sentido si los estudiantes no están motivados por aprender, por sus carreras y seguros de su competitividad en el futuro.

¿Qué habilidad es necesario desarrollar hoy en día?
​
Es fundamental el desarrollo de pensamiento crítico. Ahora tenemos todas las respuestas en nuestros celulares, así que llegar a la respuesta no es el reto para los estudiantes del futuro. Lo que importa es cómo llegas a la solución correcta. Es una pedagogía fundamental.

Eso significa que todos debemos cambiar la forma como pensamos, incluidos los maestros…

Debemos pensar en cambiar el rol de la educación. Celebramos a los maestros innovadores. Cada vez que viajo por el mundo veo clases donde se está desarrollando el futuro hoy. Los maestros están arreglándoselas para traer nuevas pedagogías y crear diferentes roles para ellos mismos; el reto es que el futuro no está universalmente distribuido, así que ellos están haciendo que este tipo de cosas pasen porque es su propia pasión.

La Universidad de Valencia y Microsoft crean una cátedra sobre seguridad y privacidad digital

El mundo digital nos rodea y los usuarios tienen, muchas veces, la sensación de que no están suficientemente protegidos cuando compran por internet o emplean las redes sociales. «Hay que saber construir un espacio de seguridad jurídica para todos, pues la privacidad no puede bloquear la investigación en ámbitos como la seguridad, la sanidad o la investigación científica», ha defendido hoy el rector de la Universitat de València, Esteban Morcillo, en la presentación de la nueva Cátedra de Privacidad y Transformación Digital creada con el patrocinio de Microsoft.

El objetivo de la cátedra, cuya duración de cuatro años, es favorecer la divulgación de conocimientos en torno a la seguridad y la privacidad en el mundo digital con la organización de jornadas, seminarios en España y en el ámbito internacional, ha explicado el director de la cátedra y profesor de Derecho Internacional Ricard Martínez.

El director de Educación de Microsoft Ibérica, Óscar Sanz, ha explicado que el mundo vivo un momento increíble, con acceso a la información de forma instantánea y la creación «de un montón de oportunidades económicas» que no pueden desaprovecharse.

«Esta ola de innovación, que trae grandes cambios, no viene sola, llega con grandes retos y desafíos: la transformación del trabajo, los problemas de seguridad pública, la privacidad de las personas», ha dicho el directivo de Microsoft. Según Sanz, esa privacidad será un eje primordial para que las empresas se embarquen en nuevos proyectos.

La cátedra, la primera de Europa que alienta Microsoft, promoverá cursos de formación sobre privacidad, ciberseguridad y transformación digital en el horizonte de 2018, fecha en la que los países se enfrentan al Reglamento de Protección de Datos de la Unión Europea, con regulaciones específicas en el tratamiento de datos personales sanitarioso relacionados con la seguridad pública.

Nigeria: Minister of Education Hails E-Curriculum Solution

El Honorable Ministro de Educación, Mallam Adamu Adamu ha aplaudido la colaboración entre el Consejo de Nigeria para la Educación Investigación y Desarrollo (NERDC), una de las entidades paraestatales clave del Ministerio Federal de Educación e Sidmach Tecnologías Nigeria Limited, para el desarrollo del proyecto del portal e-plan de estudios. El portal de e-plan de estudios es una solución de gestión curricular basado en la web, eficaz para la Educación Secundaria Básica y Superior en Nigeria. La solución está diseñada para proporcionar un acceso digital a planes de estudios, la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de recursos para los profesores, los estudiantes y otros grupos de interés. El objetivo es garantizar el acceso en línea y fuera de línea para el plan de estudios nacional prescrito en todas las materias que se ofrecen en los niveles de educación secundaria básica y superior en Nigeria.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has applauded the collaboration between the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council(NERDC), one of the key parastatals of the Federal Ministry of Education and Sidmach Technologies Nigeria Limited, on the e-Curriculum portal project. This unique technological solution, according to the minister, is a bold step toward achieving the federal government’s policy on information technology in education.

Adamu made this remark in an opening address at the stakeholders’ forum in Abuja recently, which was organised by NERDC, Sidmach in partnership with Microsoft. The forum was aimed at affording all stakeholders in the Education sector the opportunity to have further knowledge on the e-Curriculum portal and its benefits.

The e-Curriculum portal is a web-based, effective curriculum management solution for Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria. The solution is designed to provide digital access to school curriculum, teaching and learning resources for teachers, learners, and other stakeholders. The purpose is to ensure online and offline access to the prescribed national curricula in all subjects offered at the basic and senior secondary education levels in Nigeria.

The minister urged all state governments through their various commissioners for education and ministries to ensure that access to the approved national curriculum through this portal is facilitated for all schools, teachers and students in their States.

He stated that, «the Federal Ministry of Education will take appropriate steps to ensure that the Unity colleges and all other schools in Nigeria key into the effective use of the e-Curriculum to enhance the needed and desired outcome of repositioning every sector in the society, especially, the education sector.»

According to him, the education sector is too large to be left to government alone, urging other private sector organisations to emulate this partnership and find ways of complementing government’s efforts by lending their expertise and resources for the effective implementation of Government policies.

The Executive Secretary, NERDC, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, while delivering his speech, pointed out that e-Curriculum portal solution is aimed at advancing NERDC’s quest for national excellence, sustainable development and global competitiveness.

According to him, the e-Curriculum portal enable students and parents have online access to subject descriptions, prerequisites, objectives and the National Curriculum content standards, assist the policy-makers, Federal Ministry of Education (FME), State Ministries of Education (SMoE), and Local Education Authorities (LGEAs) in standardising curriculum across all schools under their jurisdiction and ensure that the curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum content standards.

«It also encourages mentor and assist teachers to create collaboration groups and form networks to plan what is going to be taught, when it will be taught and the related tools and resources for instruction. Enhances the actualisation of NERDC’s efforts in providing the educational system with functional, sustainable, needs-driven, globally competitive curriculum and learner resources among others,» he noted.

The Executive Secretary credited their partner, Sidmach Technologies Nigeria Limited, for this bold initiative using the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, their tremendous technical and resource support as well as enthusiasm for e-Curriculum portal project.

He stated that the objective of this PPP arrangement with Sidmach is to, among others, harness the potential of the private sector in tackling the challenges of access to the basic and senior secondary education curriculum; education standards, quality and teacher development.

On his part, the Managing Director, Sidmach Technologies Nigeria Limited, Chief Peter Arogundade, noted that e-Curriculum portal is a complete teaching and learning tool which helps teachers and students teach and learn better, using the NERDC approved curriculum. He stated further that the adoption and use of this e- resource will make work smarter and lives better.

He stated that since the commencement of operations in 1994, Sidmach has blazed the trail in the provision of innovative ICT solutions and over time, saying the company has explored PPP to deploy its projects, one of the outcomes is the e- Curriculum project done in partnership with NERDC and Microsoft.

Minecraft: Education Edition beta coming in May

Resumen: Antes que termine el mes de Mayo, Microsoft estará liberando la versión Beta del juego Minecraft en unas 100 escuelas de 30 paises. Esta será la primera vez que se coloque este producto a disposición del público, la cual fue anunciada en Enero. Minecraft es un juego de construcción con bloques para proteger al jugador de ataques de «monstruos».

Before June’s early access, Microsoft will be testing the Beta version of the game in 100 schools throughout 30 countries; it will be the first public trial since the company announced the edition in January. Across the summer, Microsoft will “be focused on working with educators on building out lesson plans, sharing learning activity ideas, and creating re-usable projects”. It has joined with Code.org in 2015 to unveil a “Minecraft” tutorial that teaches kids how to code. This was to mark the annual Hour of Code campaign. The “early access” program will be available in 11 languages and 41 countries. Microsoft aims to provide a library of lesson plans for teachers to use, which include things like tours of the Great Pyramids of Giza, pixel art, the Temple of Artemis, and more.

Teachers will need to be running Windows 10 or OS X El Capitan and have an Office 365 Education account to download the customized game. This beta will be used to get more detailed feedback on the product so Microsoft can fine-tune for the diverse learning environments of its customers.

Announced earlier in the year, Microsoft has finally confirmed the next incarnation of the game that never stops giving will arrive this summer. Microsoft has very strategically timed the launch of the education version of this software, especially when almost 7000 schools in over 40 countries already use this game as part of their curriculum. It will be available for purchase via direct and volume licensing channels.
