Setting up of an information portal by the Indian government for Indian students keen on pursuing foreign education and putting out a list of accredited recruiting consultants to help students avoid fraudulent operators – these were some of the suggestions put forth by the Russian Culture Centre in the city during the India and Russian Students Conference on Monday.
The conference was organised by the ministry of external affairs along with Russian Centre of Science and Culture in celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Managing director of Study Abroad Consultants C Ravichandran said there has been a growing interest for studies in Russia from Indian students over the last two to three years. This has to go along with streamlining the process of foreign education be it the process of recruitment, academic procedures, the lodging of students, graduation and what follows after it, he added.

Consul general of the Russian federation in Chennai Sergey L Kotov said the number of students from south India going to Russian universities has been on the rise.

«Last year, we issued 40% more visas compared to the year before for students from the south. Student exchanges are a vital part of diplomatic relations between Russia and India,» he said.

A total of 803 students had left from the south for the 2016 academic year.

The conference organised on Monday aimed at providing guidance about higher studies to Indian as well as Russian students and involved video conference sessions with 1,500 delegates from across the two countries including nine cities in India.
