Cameroon: Education – Littoral Authorities Laud Private Initiatives, But..

A meeting to evaluate the 2015/2016 school year held in Douala on July 28, 2016.

It is no news that private schools in the country produce some of the best results in State examinations. The remarks were made during the annual evaluation by the Regional Committee for Private Education in Douala on July 28, 2016. The meeting held at a time the Libermann College and Collège la Conquête in Douala feature among the best secondary schools in Cameroon following the release of the 2015 classification of «l’Office du Baccalauréat du Cameroun.»

Despite the good performance, the private sector is plagued by many problems. Representing the Governor of the Littoral Region at the evaluation meeting, the Inspector General in the Governor’s Office, congratulated private schools for their brilliant results. He however frowned at the functioning of clandestine schools and the non-respect of procedures in the creation of schools. He also condemned the non-respect of labour and social security legislation, low wages and the non-payment of taxes.

Emile Yomkil, Littoral’s Delegate for Secondary Education, commended the efforts of the private sector in lifting the region during certificate examinations. He disclosed that the war waged by his office two years ago against illegal schools led to the shutting down of over 50 of such institutions. However, some of the closed schools regularised their situation and were reopened.
