Irlanda: Teachers warn of job losses after education cuts proposed in budget

Teachers in Northern Ireland have warned jobs could be lost after the secretary of state proposed cuts to education spending.

James Brokenshire published indicative figures on Monday for a budget he would pass if the parties cannot reach a deal in the talks at Stormont.

A cut of 2.5% could equate to a loss of £50m for education.

Trade unions have rejected the proposals saying they could lead to redundancies and will “push the system closer to the tipping point”.

ICTU spokesperson Owen Reidy said: «The education unions have made clear the already precarious position faced by schools.

“A further cut of this magnitude will lead to additional redundancies in education across the board. Class sizes will increase. Choices will be curtailed.

“The horizons for our students will shrink.”

Mr Brokenshire said he had taken advice the proposals from civil servants and sought to reflect the priorities of the local parties before the Assembly was dissolved in January.

But Owen Reidy added: “Those parties should mark his copy and point out that the people of NI did not vote for austerity budgets from their Stormont parties.»

The politicians will decide on Thursday whether to halt talks to restore power-sharing until the General Election is over in June.
