Malasya: Student activism: Higher Education Minister challenged to walk the talk

Malasya/April 03, 2018/By: Haikal Jalil/ Source: http://www.thesundaily.my

The Higher Education Ministry should ensure that students would not face action from their universities if they decide to be involved in politics outside of campus.

Mahasiswa Pakatan Harapan chairman Na’im Brundage said such a guarantee must be given by the ministry if it was sincere in allowing students to participate in political campaigning in the upcoming 14th General Election.

He added that previous disciplinary action imposed by universities on students that were involved in anti-government rallies did not indicate that university students indeed had the right to be involved in politics.

«Taking action against them is a clear indication that students are still not free to involve actively in politics, even when such activities are done outside of campus.

«If (Higher Education Minister) Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh is serious about giving students the freedom to participate in politics, he should ensure that higher education institutions will not take any disciplinary action (against the students),» he said in a press conference at Wangsa Maju today.

Idris on Tuesday had stated that university students were free to join political campaigns outside the campus ahead of GE14.

Idris had said that unlike the time of previous leadership which restricted university students from getting involved, today’s students were free to engage in politics if they had a keen interest in doing so.

Na’im said the recent statement made by Idris was nothing more than sweet talk.

He also issued a debate challenge to Idris over the issue of student involvement in politics.

He said other officials from the Higher Education Ministry were also free to take up the challenge if Idris refuse to do so.

Malaysia has clear education roadmap; on track to achieve TN50: Mahdzir

Malaysia/ March 27, 2018/By THARANYA ARUMUGAM/Source: https://www.nst.com.my

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid today took a swipe at critics who condemned the Malaysian education system and policies.

He said Malaysia has a clear and extensive education roadmap that serves as guideline to the ministry, schools, teachers and students.

«We are on the right track towards achieving the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) vision in propelling Malaysia into the world’s top 20 nations.

«The government prioritises quality education, hence the reason we have various frameworks and policies such as the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, National Education Policy and English Language Roadmap 2015-2025.

«While there are many critics here (in Malaysia) condemning our education system and policies, we continue to strive to ensure our children receive quality education on par with the global standards.

«These critics fail to realise that Malaysia is on the right pathway. We also ensure all strata of society obtain equal education, such as continuing vernacular school system in the country,» he said at the SMK Kota Kemuning 2 groundbreaking ceremony in Kota Kemuning today.

Mahdzir cited Singapore and Indonesia as examples, where he said Singapore abolished vernacular schools and only developed English-medium schools, while Indonesia chose Bahasa Indonesia as its official language.

«But Malaysia as a multinational country continue to allocate funds to build more vernacular schools, catering to the needs of the people. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has also assured that this initiative will continue as long as Barisan Nasional remains the ruling government.

«The government allocated about RM50 million each for Chinese, Tamil, religious and missionary schools.

«But this has angered certain quarters saying that we should abolish vernacular schools to move forward.

«We are only finding ways to inculcate a sense of oneness among students to ensure unity remains in the community when they grow up. (Not to abolish vernacular schools).

«There is no need to involve politics in the education system. I am confident the people of Selangor can see the government’s efforts for themselves and make the right choices.

«Water is a necessity. How can you say it is a developed state if the people still suffer from water crisis? They (critics) should first address this before commenting about the education system.»

It was reported that as of March 31, 2016, there were 2,058 national schools, 578 Chinese vernacular schools, and 360 Tamil vernacular schools in Malaysia.

Based on an operational cost analysis, these schools need RM67,130.65 per student every year compared to RM5,321.84 annually per student in other schools.

Malaysia: Govt emphasises quality education to produce future leaders, says Zahid

Malaysia/February 13, 2018/Source: http://www.themalaymailonline.com

The government always emphasises quality education in the country’s education agenda to produce human capital with calibre in all aspects, said Deputy Prime Minister  Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the government set aside huge allocation in its budget every year, whether for early education or higher education, to produce successful students to become future leaders of the country.

“Why do the government have to invest so much? It means the government has focus, in terms of human capital, the government wants to see Malaysia becomes a developed nation.

“God willing, by TN50, the government’s aim of 60 per cent of the work force to have diploma or first degree will be realised,” he said at a session with new students of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) here today.

Also present were Ahmad Zahid’s wife, Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, UTHM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Wahid Razzaly and Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said most of the leaders in the country were produced from the success of the well-formulated national education system.

He said there were quarters pointing fingers at the government saying that the country’s education system was wrong, when they should instead be looking at their own mistakes.

“Leaders should be moulded and not born. We are not born as leaders, but moulded into leaders because of the country’s good education,” he said.

He said the present students of higher institutions were fortunate because the government gave priority to physical and spiritual development to ensure success of the millennial group, hence enabling them to fill the employment market in the future.

Ahmad Zahid advised the UTHM students to fully utilise their opportunity to study at the university.

“The opportunity only comes once in a lifetime to balance the worldly and the hereafter to become a well-balanced citizen and an asset to the country, and not a liability,” he said.

The deputy prime minister also announced a RM2 million allocation for the development of UTHM campus at Tanjong Laboh here. — Bernama
