ONU insta a los medios a apoyar campaña contra violencia de género

La Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) instó a los medios de comunicación del mundo a apoyar la campaña contra la violencia de género, a propósito de la conmemoración del Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres, el próximo 25 de noviembre.

La secretaria general adjunta de la ONU, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, espera que los medios “decidan prestar su poderosa voz a esta causa y colaborar en los esfuerzos mundiales dirigidos a eliminar la violencia contra las mujeres y las niñas”, escribió en una carta dirigida a los medios de comunicación citada por Prensa Latina.

Recordó que la campaña comenzará el 25 de noviembre y culminará el 10 de diciembre. La actividad cuenta con el apoyo de organizaciones públicas, de salud, feministas y grupos sociales. La campaña fue denominada Pinta el mundo de naranja: Pon fin a la violencia contra las mujeres y las niñas.

“El color naranja es un símbolo de un futuro más brillante sin violencia contra las mujeres” señaló Mlambo-Ngcuka según citó   Prensa Latina.

Como parte de la jornada de actividades, informó que varios sitios emblemáticos del planeta serán iluminados con luces naranja y también tienen previsto movilizaciones, publicación de artículos en prensa, radio y televisión.

Indicó que el apoyo de los medios permitirá al mundo conocer los compromisos adoptados por cada nación para enfrentar y combatir este flagelo. “Se trata de una grave violación de los derechos humanos, una pandemia que debemos detener”.

El Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres fue establecido en la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas en 1999, en homenaje a las hermanas Mirabal, tres activistas políticas asesinadas en 1960 durante la dictadura de Rafael Trujillo, en República Dominicana.

En 2014 la ONU llamó al mundo a utilizar el color naranja para mostrar solidaridad durante los 16 días que separan el Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer y el Día de los Derechos Humanos, que se conmemorará el 10 de diciembre próximo.

Resumen El 31 de marzo de el año 2016 en Pohnpei, Estados federados de Micronesia (FSM)-, se celebró el día de la cultura y tuvo lugar en el edificio de la Administración Pohpei. Se inició con una ceremonia sakau después de que todas las carrozas habían llegado con una escolta policial. La celebraciones del día de la Cultura se llevaron a cabo a lo largo el FSM

Pohnpei, FSM—At 3:00 this afternoon, a celebration was held at the Pohpei Administration building. The celebration was all about culture and in true Pohnpei fashion, began with a sakau ceremony after all of the parade floats had arrived with a police escort.
Vendors from throughout Pohnpei pedaled their wares at the event selling everything from food to art. FSM Islanders Arts Society, a newly established NGO had some amazing art work on display. It didn’t seem clear whether any of that impressive art work was for sale.

Crowds gathered much earlier than the announced start time but no one seemed to be impatient.
Governor Marcelo Peterson spoke to the crowd which included members of Pohnpei’s traditional leadership, Vice President Yosiwo George, the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Pohnpei State Legislature, and numerous other dignitaries as well as the “rank and file”of Pohnpei residents.
President Peter Christian was unable to attend due to other commitments but he assigned Dr. Rufino Mauricio of the FSM’s office of Historical Preservation to address the crowd.
The Senipein Youth presented a long song in commemoration of the event.
Iso Nahnken of Nett, Salvador Iriarte gave the final word on behalf of the Mwoalen Wahu.
Children of the Early Childhood Education program finished off the program with recitations given with great excitement.
Cultural Day celebrations were held throughout the FSM though some States opted to move the date to Friday, apparently in order to take advantage of a long weekend.

Resumen: Los estudiantes de cinco de las islas del grupo sur de Oceanía se encontraron en Rarotonga para un taller de una semana de duración coordinado por el Servicio Nacional de Medio Ambiente (NES) proyecto de Ridge-a-Coral y la resiliencia de las Comunidades Island de proyecto de Cambio Climático (SRICC). Students from five of the southern group islands are on Rarotonga for a week-long workshop coordinated by the National Environment Service (NES) Ridge-to-Reef project and the Resilience of Island Communities to Climate Change (SRICC) project.

The Ridge to Reef (R2R) project is taking a step up and supporting the southern group island schools on biodiversity conservation and climate change issues.
The project aims to provide technical support to the schools based on proposals for ideas that they would like to see become reality on their islands.
“The students come up with the idea, the idea gets developed further by the teams here and then support is given to them via their island council so that there is continuous buy in and support all the way through proposal development and implementation,” says R2R project coordinator Maria Tuoro.
In the lead-up to the workshop opening, students and two teachers from Mangaia, Mitiaro, Mauke, Atiu, and Aitutaki will meet with NES and SRICC staff to discuss their topics and presentations, and the agencies will offer technical advice.
Each school has come up with a concept and project relating to their respective islands and has captured each stage on camera. Footage will be edited and ready for screening next week in Rarotonga.
Atiu students will focus on endemic species, Aitutaki on lagoon quality and activities on land, Mauke, invasive species, Mangaia, Raui and ecotourism, and Mitiaro, the Maroro Tu.
Meanwhile, Rotaract has offered to compile and edit the school’s video footage and photos and a mini film festival has been organised to screen short documentaries at the Punanga Nui Market next Thursday.
Along with the schools, NES in partnership with SRICC and the Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR) will compile a 20-minute documentary of the overall workshop to showcase along with the Katu-Kanga series from Cook Islands Tourism Corporation and other locally-produced programmes.
The workshop starts this Friday at the Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa and ends on April 29.

Resumen: Pohnpei, Estado Federado de Micronesia , ahora tiene otro gimnasio y centro de usos múltiples situada en la propiedad de la escuela primaria Sekere. El gimnasio fue donado al Departamento de Educación del Estado de Pohnpei por el pueblo de Japón a un costo de $ 194.628. La finalidad de la concesión era para la educación de jóvenes y desarrollo de la comunidad mediante la promoción del deporte y la cultura tradicional.

Pohnpei, FSM—Pohnpei State now has another gymnasium and multi-purpose center situated on the property of the Sekere Elementary School. The gym was donated to the Pohnpei State Department of Education by the people of Japan at a cost of $194,628. The purpose for the grant was for youth education and community development through promotion of sports and traditional culture.
This morning was the ribbon cutting ceremony which was attended by dozens of local community members as well as State and National officials, and Ambassador Masaki Sakai of the Japanese Embassy. At the end of the ceremony, Ambassador Sakai demonstrated his basketball dribbling prowess before delivering a ceremonial jump ball to two Sekere Elementary School students.
Before entering the multi-purpose center, some of the students of Sekere Elementary participated in the State Anthem.
Ambassador Sakai, FSM Secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs Lorrin Robert, Governor Marcelo Peterson, Acting Director of the Pohnpei Department of Education Destry Tom, Pohnpei State Senator and Lepen Sekere Rensper Liwy, and Sekere Community Youth Association President Nixon Ludwig ceremonially cut the ribbon for the new center.
Immediately following, all of Sekere’s Church leaders blessed the building and the dignitaries were ushered to their seats.
Sekere Elementary School Principal, Pastor Loriano Martin served as the Master of Ceremonies and introduced the invited dignitaries several times during the ceremony which lasted for two hours.
Juan San Nicolas of APSCO Construction handed over the symbolic key to a long line of recipients ending with Mr. Tom handing the key to Nixon Ludwig of SCYA.
Ambassador Sakai has participated in each ceremony for the Sekere Community Multi- Purpose Gymnasium. He and his staff drove the grant process through. He spoke of the friendly relations between the FSM and Japan, the “Kizuna”, the tight bonds of friendship. He spoke of the two ceremonies he had attended before on the site and the fact that it had rained on each occasion and had been told that rain indicated a blessing on the project.
Governor Peterson spoke about the benefits to all Pohnpeians as the people of the State battle against non-communicable diseases.
Before Ambassador Sakai tossed the first basketball into the air for the symbolic jump ball, there was a dramatic moment as the basketball hoops were lowered into position and the score board was lit up with all of its buzzers and bells.
Since the date of the opening of the gym it has seen consistent use in the community

Palau Community College (PCC) en asociación con American Samoa Community College, el Colegio de Micronesia – FSM, el Colegio de las Islas Marshall y Marianas del Norte College, se les han concedido una subvención de $ 900.000 de la Fundación Nacional de Ciencia de Estados Unidos para apoyar a la ciencia, tecnología, Ingeniería y educación matemática (STEM) en sus instituciones. Esta subvención altamente competitivo mejorará la enseñanza de las ciencias del medio ambiente marino y en los cinco colegios de la comunidad que sirven a minorías de las Islas del Pacífico. La donación apoyará el desarrollo curricular, el desarrollo profesional de la facultad de la universidad, las prácticas, las experiencias de campo para los estudiantes, y fortalecerá la infraestructura científica de las instituciones participantes. La atención se centrará en los ecosistemas insulares y la ciencia del cambio climático, y las actividades incluirán un mayor uso de nuevas herramientas y tecnologías, y soporte para prácticas de estudiantes y experiencias de investigación.
Dos de los talleres para la capacitación de profesores y estudiantes se llevará a cabo en el Palau Internacional Coral Reef Center (PICRC), que ha sido el anfitrión de los talleres anteriores, que apoyan este programa en el desarrollo de la capacidad regional. Los investigadores principales son el Dr. Patrick Tellei, Presidente del PCC y ex presidente de la Junta PICRC, Vernice Yuzi, Profesor Asociado de Ciencias en la PCC, y el Dr. Robert Richmond, director de la Universidad de Kewalo Laboratorio Marino de Hawai, ambos de los cuales son actualmente los miembros de la Junta PICRC.
El Presidente PICRC Junta, Noah Idechong, y CEO Dr. Yimnang Golbuu, también han proporcionado un liderazgo clave para lograr este programa de financiamiento. El Dr. Richmond declaró «PICRC y el PCC han sido destacados líderes y socios en el apoyo a este programa regional de capacitación, sin la cual no habría tenido el éxito que permite la continuación del financiamiento.» Más de 1.000 estudiantes de las islas del Pacífico se han beneficiado del apoyo proporcionado por la NSF para los colegios de la comunidad regional.
