UNICEF está listo para ayudar a las familias y los niños tras la erupción volcánica y el tsunami en Tonga

SUVA, Fiyi, 17 de enero de 2022 : UNICEF Pacífico está listo para trabajar junto con el Gobierno de Tonga y sus socios para garantizar que se brinde apoyo urgente para salvar vidas a familias y niños después de la erupción volcánica y el tsunami.

“Estamos listos para brindar apoyo humanitario al Gobierno de Tonga y su pueblo afectado por la erupción volcánica y el tsunami”, dijo el representante de UNICEF en el Pacífico, Jonathan Veitch. “UNICEF trabajará con el gobierno, las organizaciones de la sociedad civil y otros socios de desarrollo para garantizar esfuerzos de respuesta inmediatos sobre el terreno, lo que incluye proporcionar agua limpia y suministros de salud de emergencia para los niños y las familias afectadas”.

Después de semanas de actividad volcánica que emitía cenizas, el volcán submarino Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai en Tonga entró en erupción violentamente el 15 de enero, con imágenes satelitales que indican una columna de ceniza, vapor y gas de 5 km de ancho, que se eleva aproximadamente 20 km sobre el volcán. En cuestión de minutos, la erupción volcánica generó un tsunami de 1,2 metros que se estrelló contra las costas de la capital de Tonga, Nuku’alofa. También se emitieron advertencias de tsunami para Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Australia y Nueva Zelanda.

La mayor parte del país se ha visto afectada por una capa de ceniza volcánica de 1 a 2 cm, que está afectando el suministro de agua y alimentos y tiene un impacto negativo en la calidad del aire. En los próximos días, el acceso al suministro de agua limpia será una prioridad inmediata. Las líneas de comunicación han estado interrumpidas desde el 15 de enero, lo que dificulta obtener información sobre el alcance de los daños.

Una vez que el Gobierno de Tonga confirme las necesidades, UNICEF estará listo para transportar sus suministros de emergencia almacenados previamente desde los almacenes de Fiji y Brisbane. Estos incluyen kits esenciales de agua, saneamiento e higiene (WASH), recipientes y baldes de agua, kits de prueba de campo de agua, lonas, kits recreativos y tiendas de campaña, que se pueden movilizar de inmediato para su distribución.

Con las fronteras cerradas en Tonga debido a la actual pandemia de COVID-19, UNICEF trabajará con el gobierno y sus socios sobre el terreno para llegar a los niños y las familias con el apoyo que necesitan con urgencia.

RESUMEN: Parlamentarios de Tonga  han debatido un enorme presupuesto de US $ 21 millones para la educación y la formación. El primer ministro Matangi Tonga   dijo que está comprometido a mejorar el sistema educativo de Tonga, que según él había sufrido durante los últimos 12 años. El primer ministro se enfrentó a las preguntas sobre el déficit presupuestario, pero sólo pudo decir que sería una batalla dura y Tonga necesitaria  aumentar la productividad. Los críticos dijeron que había muy poco endeudamiento en Tonga, debido a las condiciones del préstamo, tales como altas tasas de interés y las leyes de negocio poco atractivo.

Tongan MPs have debated a huge US$21 million budget for education and training.

The Prime Minister, ‘Akilisi Pohiva, justified the spending, saying 80 percent of it was for salaries.

Matangi Tonga reports the Prime Minister said he’s committed to improving Tonga’s education system, which he claimed had suffered over the past 12 years.

The Prime Minister faced questions over the budget deficit, but could only say it would be a hard battle and Tongans needed to increase productivity.

He said the the productivity rate of government ministries was only 18 percent, compared with 80 percent for the Chinese construction companies that were carrying out work in Tonga.

The Minister of Finance, ‘Aisake Eke, said he was concerned over talk of a budget deficit when there was US$16 million in the country’s foreign reserve.

Critics said there was very little borrowing in Tonga due to loan terms, such as high interest rates and unattractive business laws.

Resumen: Hasta 30 nuevos premios se ofrecen a los habitantes de Tonga para estudiar en Australia y el Pacífico en 2017, y los estudiantes serán seleccionados mediante un proceso competitivo tramitado por la Alta Comisión Australiana en consulta con el Gobierno de Tonga.

Up to 30 new awards are being offered to Tongans to study in Australia and the Pacific in 2017, and students will be selected through a competitive process managed by the Australian High Commission in consultation with the Government of Tonga.
The Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, HE Mr Andrew Ford, said that in the past 20 years, over 400 Tongan students have received a scholarship from the Australian Government to undertake long term higher education in Australia and the Pacific region. Many others have funded themselves to undertake studies in Australia. 107 students are currently on award.
He welcomed about 50 alumni members to an Australia Alumni Networking Event at the Australian Residence in Nuku’alofa last night, and said that Australia will offer ongoing support for scholarships and alumni activities in Tonga, with expanded support for technical and vocational skills development and a particular focus on opportunities for women.
“Australia’s investments in Australia Awards and the Australia Pacific Technical College are providing opportunities for people from across the Pacific, and helping drive economic growth in the region,” he said.
“The Australian Government is committed to supporting education, training and the development of marketable skills to assist Pacific Islanders to lead more productive lives.”
In 2015, 65 Tongans received Australia Award scholarships or fellowships to study at tertiary institutions in Australia and the Pacific.
Tonga’s Minister of Finance, Hon. ‘Aisake ‘Eke, recognized the importance of the educational assistance, and said that in particular, the technical and vocational skills development in Tonga would help many young people to offer more services to the community.
The event marked the recent launch of an Australian Global Alumni Association.

Tupou College will celebrate its 150th Anniversary on June 17-24 with events that are is expected to bring together thousands of old boys from throughout Tonga and abroad.
Principal Rev ‘Alifeleti ‘Atiola said a dedication service marking the anniversary will be held on Wednesday, 22 June at the Centennial Church in Nuku’alofa. HMKing Tupou VI will deliver the sermon.
On Thursday, 23 June the King will also officiate the opening of a new administration block, currently being constructed with more than $3 million pa’anga funded by the ex-students.
He said the one-storey building will accommodate a library, e-learning center, lecture theatre, staff room, finance and administration wings.
On Tuesday, 21 June a school march with the Old Boys will be held in the capital, followed by a roll call to recognize the achievements of the old boys.
Other works being carried out to mark the day include the renovation and extension of the school’s Moulton Chapel built in 1986 at Toloa, in remembrance of Rev Dr Moulton, the founder of the school in 1866.
In addition, new dormitories are also being constructed with renovation to the school gym and a health center.
The principal said a musical concert is being planned to be held with representatives from their brother school Newington College in Australia, during the celebrations.
The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga secondary school, is an all-boys boarding school and currently has a roll of around 1000 students.

After the first two-days of competition at Tonga’s 92nd Annual Inter-Collegiate Athletics Competition, all boys boarding school Tupou College led the medal count on Wednesday, 27 April.
The four-day competiton which began on Tuesday, 26 April at Teufaiva Outdoor stadium is heating up with athletes from 19 secondary and middle schools from throughout Tonga competing vigorously.
The results released by the Sports Committee of medals awarded on the first two-days from 26-27 April, Tupou College led with 16 gold medals, 11 silver and 12 bronze.
Tupou High School came in second with 15 gold medals, six silver and seven bronze.
In third, was Queen Sālote College with nine gold, 12 silver and eight bronze.
On Thursday, the third day more medals were awarded while more finals were held in the 800m, 100m, 400m hurdles and 200m for both girls and boys, with field events including javelin, high jump and long jump.
The medal tally will be rounded up today, Friday 29 April the final day of the competition.

Resumen: Dos aulas fueron arrasadas por un incendio la madrugada del  miércoles 20 de abril en el campus principal de Tonga Side School en Nuku’alofa. Una investigación realizada por la policía y los bomberos está en marcha para determinar la causa.

Two classrooms were razed by a fire early this morning, Wednesday 20 April at Tonga Side School main campus in Nuku’alofa. An investigation by police and fire services is underway to determine the cause.

The Acting Deputy Fire Commissioner Sinamoni Kauvaka said the fire was reported to them at around 1:45am by a phone call and a driver who stopped by the fire station.
He said there were no casualities but the esimated loss is more than $60,000 pa’anga.
When the firefighters arrived at the school a block of four classrooms was on fire. “Two classrooms were already engulfed and our firefighters could not save them but managed to save the remaining two and prevented the fire from further spreading to a neighbouring government flat, which was located just 5 metres away from this classroom block,” he said.
The Deputy Fire Commissioner said the origin of the fire seemed to have begun from the top or ceiling in one of the classrooms.
“At this stage we have nothing that would suggest anything suspicious but our investigation continues to determine the cause,” he said.
The two razed classrooms belonged to the students of Class 3-4.
Tonga Side School is a government school that teaches Class 1 to Form 2 levels.

En Tonga Inauguran Edificios Escolares Mas Resistentes Al Clima

Los nuevos edificios escolares resistentes al clima, que han sido reconstruidos y renovados en Ha’apai después de haber sido gravemente dañada por el ciclón tropical Ian en 2014, fueron entregados al gobierno de Tonga semana pasada, el 26 de febrero, así lo dio a conocer el portal Matangi tonga Online
Doce escuelas primarias fueron reconstruidos y renovados, diez de los cuales fueron co-financiadas con millones proporcionados por el Banco Asiático de Desarrollo ( BAD ) y el Gobierno de Nueva Zelanda a finales del año pasado.
Mientras tanto, la reconstrucción de la Escuela Secundaria Ha’apai está todavía en curso y las clases fueron renovados antes del inicio del año escolar con obras restante para ser completado antes de junio, el BAD dijo en un comunicado.
Primer Ministro Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva dijo que el Gobierno de Tonga valora la relación con el BAD y el Gobierno de Nueva Zelanda. Con las siguientes palabras dijo, » Agradecemos su apoyo para la reconstrucción de las instalaciones de las escuelas primaria y secundaria más resilientes al clima en Ha’apai. El Alto Comisionado HE Sarah Walsh dijo que Nueva Zelanda estaba siempre dispuesta a ayudar a Tonga, como un amigo y vecino. Dijo además que en el período inmediatamente posterior al ciclón tropical Ian, Nueva Zelanda comprometido $ 6.3 millones de dólares estadounidenses ( NZ $ 7.4 millones de dólares) para ayudar en la evaluación de los daños, los suministros de socorro, la restauración de la red eléctrica y los esfuerzos de reconstrucción a largo plazo. Dijo así » Estamos encantados de trabajar con ADB en la reconstrucción de escuelas dañadas gravemente, dada su experiencia en la implementación de proyectos de infraestructura resistente al clima» .
ADB también había ayudado a restaurar la energía a 1.000 hogares y más de 45 kilómetros de líneas eléctricas bajo un proyecto que también mejoró la red de alimentación principal de Ha’apai por lo que es más resistente a los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos para asegurar la entrega futura de la fuente de alimentación fiable.
En los últimos años, el BAD ha aumentado significativamente su apoyo a Tonga. Desde 2008, se ha comprometido más de $ 70 millones de dólares estadounidenses, más que en todo el período desde que Tonga unió ADB en 1972, con la mayor parte de la financiación en forma de donaciones.
