Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Education, issued the following statement about the recently concluded review of the School Boards Collective Bargaining Act:

We are pleased to have reached negotiated central agreements under the School Boards’ Collective Bargaining Act(SBCBA) with all nine teacher and education workers unions. It is a testament to the commitment and hard work of our education partners that by working collaboratively we were able to achieve net-zero agreements that support student achievement.

The first round of bargaining under the SBCBA laid a strong foundation and framework for future bargaining. We want to ensure future rounds of negotiations are effective, efficient and collaborative. In order to build on the success of this first round of bargaining under the SBCBA, we committed to review the Act to further improve the process.

Today, I am pleased to release a summary of those consultations. I would like to thank Jim Breckenridge for his work on conducting the review of the SBCBA.

I would also like to thank our partners for sharing their feedback on this first round of bargaining under our new and innovative legislative framework and for offering suggestions about how the bargaining process could potentially be refined. It is clear that we are all committed to making the SBCBA work.

I intend to review all of the input provided through this consultation process. We will continue to engage with our partners in the coming months about any potential improvements.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this comprehensive review of the SBCBA— and for their continued commitment to student achievement and well-being. I look forward to building strong relationships and engaging with our education partners to further strengthen student achievement.
