Ethiopia: University urged to create environment conducive for knowledge acquisition

Resumen: La Universidad Asossa presentó su informe sobre la ejecución de nueve meses a la Comisión Permanente de Asuntos de Educación Superior de la Cámara de los Representantes del Pueblo. El Comité ha pedido a la Universidad para seguir trabajando la creación y mejora del entorno de trabajo favorable. El presidente de la Universidad Dr. Amsalu Bedemo dijo que la Universidad se enfrenta a un problema de rotación de empleados en particular instructores. La relación maestro-estudiante de la Universidad 1:72 también se está convirtiendo estorbo para garantizar una educación de calidad en la Universidad

The Asossa University presented its nine-month performance report to the Higher Education Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples Representatives yesterday. The Committee has urged the University to work further on creating and improving conducive working environment.

Presenting the report, University President Dr. Amsalu Bedemo said that the University is faced with a problem of employee turnover particularly instructors. The University 1:72 teacher-student ratio is also becoming encumbrance to ensure quality education at the University, he added.

He further said that the University gives priority to the provision of technological based on community-oriented research. Currently, the University is providing tutorial program and financial support as well as guidance and counseling service to female students to improve their participation and success.

According to him, there is lack of class room due to the delay in the construction and time-consuming bidding process ahead of starting construction.

Committee Chairperson Tadesse Ordofa emphasized that the University’s role in improving education quality need to be reinforced so as to be a preferable center of excellence. Thus, the University is expected to pay attention to continuous experience sharing activity with other universities in the country, he added.

The Committee urged the University to motivate teachers and students to actively work on assisting and serving the community with their knowledge by applying modern technological instruments. The delay of the construction of students clinic, the university’s compound fence and the classroom should be averted by communicating with the contractors.

Assossa University was established in 2012 and started its regular teaching-learning program by receiving 1,043 students. Currently, it conducts teaching-learning activity at only one campus with five faculties and two post-graduate programs. Its present enrollment capacity has reached 7,814.
