5 Things Every Teacher Should Know About Autism

The world’s opinion on autism is divided. Some believe it is on the rise, while others claim that the percentage of people on the spectrum remained the same, but we got a better understanding of the spectrum. Every 43rd child is autistic, and this fact which was the reason why governments make inclusive education programs. As a result, a number of autistic children now attend regular classes with their peers. This, however, made it necessary for teachers to know more about autistic children and find ways to help them adapt and adjust. Here are some common misconceptions about autism and a few things teachers should know.

What makes autistic children different?

Autistic children have a different way of perceiving reality, and their senses often work in a different way than you might expect. This means that children on the autistic spectrum might not remove their sweater if it’s too hot in the classroom or lower their voice even though they speak too loud or even shout during class. Every child with autism is different and unique and teachers should be familiar with the child’s character and habits before they introduce them to the rest of the class. Some children are nonverbal while others are loud, many are highly intelligent and have an extraordinary gift for specific subjects or topics. Labelling them as completely different is definitely not an option because, with appropriate care, these children could really use their potential and make progress.

Use teaching methods which support their strengts

Just like children who aren’t on the spectrum, autistic children have different strengths and weakness, yet theirs are a bit more extreme. They might be capable of extraordinary things, having an outstanding talent for math, arts, or music, but at the same time, they might be incapable of spelling their name correctly. This is why you should apply teaching techniques which support their talents rather than focus on improving their bad pronunciation. If you need help understanding your autistic students, you can always reach out to Behaviour Zen and ask their professional help and opinion on the matter. You shouldn’t try to prevent their repetitive patterns, or try to change their behaviour, as such approaches will only cause them to become anxious, angry, or even provoke acts of violence.

How to accept stimming

Repetitive patterns that some autistic children are prone to are called stimming (short for self-stimulation) and these are natural for some autistic children. The repetitive motions, actions, and sounds they make help them stay calm and they find it comforting. These patterns vary:

they could be flapping their heads, spinning, shifting their weight, running back and forth, pacing around, or rocking while sitting in the same spot. Although this kind of behaviour might be distracting for you and other students, you have to find a way to accept it and to explain to the other students that it helps the child feel better. What is good about it is that these repetitive patterns seem to occur always at a similar time so you could organise your class around them. This way, autistic children are going to be more included.

How to remain calm

When autistic children are throwing a tantrum, it is important to stay calm and not to change your behaviour. Your body language should remain casual and natural and you shouldn’t be raising your voice. Sometimes you will have to talk to the child in private, away from the class, but it will help them understand better what you want and need from them. When talking to autistic children, use simple language and keep your sentences brief, as it will be easier for them to process and understand what you want from them.

Give them time

Speaking of simple language and brief sentences, it’s often helpful to be very patient and not take too many steps with autistic children. Even though it’s not the same for everyone, most autistic children will appreciate if you take things slowly and not expect them to follow your train of thought immediately. When giving instructions, give them the simplest two-step instructions you can muster, even if it means working with them longer than with the other children in the class. When you finish speaking to hem, give them a couple of seconds to process your instructions before they answer or ask you a question. When repeating things, don’t paraphrase, as it will take them longer to process this new statement.

The class atmosphere can be unpredictable when you’re working with autistic children, and the most important thing is to stay calm. Although it’s easier said than done, it is possible to keep control in these situations; short breaks are your best friends and don’t hesitate to use them often. When you see that things are getting out of hand, back down, have a short break, and try again. Patience is your best friend, and autistic children will love learning from you.

India: Delhi schools told to ensure infra for the differently abled

The specifications for such infrastructure has been given in a handbook recently compiled by the directorate. The education department is distributing such handbooks across Delhi government schools to ensure barrier- free accessibility in the school buildings for children with disabilities.

An official from the inclusive education branch (IEB) of the directorate said that so far, 200 government schools under Directorate of Education (DOE) had received the handbooks(File)

To promote inclusive education in all Delhi government schools, the Directorate of Education (DOE) has directed all heads of government schools to maintain, provide, renovate, and repair existing infrastructure to ensure they are friendly to the differently- abled.

“This shall be done through Public Works Department by generating EOR (extra ordinary repair),” a recent DOE circular said adding that no further construction should be done without ensuring the same. “Any leniency or non-compliance of this circular/order will be viewed seriously,” it added.

The specifications for such infrastructure has been given in a handbook recently compiled by the directorate. The education department is distributing such handbooks across Delhi government schools to ensure barrier-free accessibility in the school buildings for children with disabilities.

An official from the inclusive education branch (IEB) of the directorate said that so far, 200 government schools under Directorate of Education (DOE) had received the handbooks. “The principals and teachers need to be sensitised. They need guidelines on how to counsel the children, their parents and how to care for them,” the official said while explaining the reason behind the distribution of such handbooks.

Along with talking about different types of disabilities, the book also talks about the rights and entitlements for children with disabilities and the penalties for offences committed against persons with disabilities. The handbook also specifies the space to be allocated for people using mobility devices as well as those walking with assistance. It also gives specifications on toilets, walks and paths, tactile pavers, corridors and ramps, door hardware, dropped kerbs, staircases, and drinking water fountain among other things.

Two hard copies of the handbook are being distributed to all government schools. According to an official IEB circular, the handbook was prepared by adopting the guidelines of Ministry of Urban development, Government of India and the handbook on barrier free accessibility by Central Public Work Department as well as in consultation with the Office of Delhi State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.

The circular also mentions Section 16(ii) and Section 89 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 which mandates that the government should make efforts to provide inclusive education in schools funded or recognized by it and any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this Act should be made to pay a fine.

“Instead of distributing handbooks, the government should audit schools to see what needs to be done. Sometimes, we do symbolic stuff and tokenism. For instance, one special educator is not going to solve the problem. One must think of a universal design and approach that every child can use and access,” Radhika Alkazi, founder of NGO ASTHA which works with children and people with disabilities. “This is band-aid approach. We need to look at overall situation like how is the child going to get to the school from say slum areas. The government says so many schools have been built but are they all accessible to all children?”

Family Struggles Drive Oakland Scholar’s Passion For Education, Community Activism

By: sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/22-05-2019

Alejandra Herrera isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and others. At a recent rally celebrating Oakland’s 510 day, the 18-year-old college-bound senior took the lead as youth coordinator for Urban Peace Movement, a non-profit that serves communities of color.

“It’s time for us to take back our power right,” said Herrera to the crowd at the rally. Later, telling KPIX 5 about her role as a social justice advocate for youth, Herrera said, “I feel like it is really important to me because I just grew up thinking that my voice never mattered.”

And in Herrera’s home is wasn’t easy to find her own voice as her parents struggled to make their relationship work. Her dad would eventually move out of the family home, leaving Herrera’s mother as the sole provider. Herrera was devastated.

“This is my father,” recalled Herrera. “He is such a nice person, but as I started growing up – especially apart from him – I feel like a little bit by little bit I learned to understand that, you know, family isn’t just two parents in a household.”

But it was Herrera’s older brother that suffered the most. Amid the family turmoil, he got caught up in the street violence in his community.

“He felt like he needed to get out of there and feel safe,” said Herrera. “But his type of safe was to carry a gun with him.”

He would soon be arrested, then deported, an experience that changed the course of Herrera’s life. She decided to make her own higher education her priority, and to help empower and educate others about the impact of street violence on communities and families.

“I never wanted to just go out and protect myself like that. I felt like my protection was education,” explained Herrera. “You know educate myself so I could educate my mom, my siblings so they could feel protected that way.”

Herrera has made helping other young people her passion. Teacher and advisor Brandy Varnado says Herrera is a leader at Arise High School in Oakland, where she has developed a future non-profit business plan that would provide free English-language classes to immigrants.

“It’s important for her voice to be heard so that the voices for other people in her community can be heard,” said Varnado.

Herrera says she plans on continuing her justice advocacy work while at college and she has advice for anyone who may be struggling with family or community violence issues.

“Do something that is going to be healthy for you,” said Herrera. “And not hurt you in any way. Find a way to express yourself. Even if that is as little as writing, reading, drawing, I feel like personally that really helped me cope with a lot of stuff. “
