How Will Education Change With The Future Of Work?

Most of the jobs that both Lambda School employees and students have did not exist twenty years ago. In this current age, desired professional skill sets change rapidly. To accommodate this, we need to move away from a society where education is viewed as a one time occurrence that happens from the ages of 18-22. Higher education needs to become both ongoing and adaptive to new career paths that pop up.

Additionally, optimizing education for acing tests isn’t going to build a strong, agile workforce in the long run. Our educational institutions need to teach students how to learn effectively, so they themselves can keep up with the constantly evolving demands of our economy, and that isn’t done by cramming for tests. We need to build an economic engine that provides a new path when old skills become obsolete.

Employers have begun to shift their hiring strategies accordingly. In evaluating talent, they are relying less and less on the perceived value of a college degree, and more on candidates’ skills and abilities to actually do the work. The piece of paper we’re used to no longer signals whether someone will be a good employee.

Beyond hard skills, our educational system needs to place a greater emphasis on soft skills. How many times have you been in a group project where one person did all the work and everybody else sat around. That won’t fly in a real work environment. Lambda requires its students to learn how to work in groups so they can succeed in the workplace, not just ace the interview
