A deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Ecuador, putting the lives of millions in danger. Early reports are that as many as half a million children, men and women have experienced very severe shaking, while 15.2 million across the region have felt the quake’s impact.

This is the strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades, and this type of quake can collapse buildings, destroy infrastructure and cause tsunamis.

You can help children and families affected by disasters like the earthquake in Ecuador – make a donation today to our Children’s Emergency Fund.

We are ready to respond following the earthquake

The extent of casualties and damage in Ecuador are being assessed, however areas of concern include Santo Domingo, the country’s largest city, that is now in a complete blackout.

Unicef staff are on the ground assessing the situation right now. We have supplies like water kits and tents pre-positioned in surrounding countries, ready to meet the needs of the children of Ecuador.

We have been working in Ecuador for 43 years. We are on the ground and ready to respond as needed and requested by government.

Keeping children safe in Ecuador

So that we can continue to be there for as many children as possible, we have a Children’s Emergency Fund. When disaster strikes, Unicef staff are ready to respond rapidly to deliver life-saving food, medicine and water, education and protection services so children in danger get the help they need, and can recover fast and resilient. We rely on money from our Children’s Emergency Fund to do this. And we rely on donations from the British public to keep the fund alive and enable us to respond to emergencies, whenever they come, and whatever their size.
