Ghana: UG college of education outdoors its strategic Plan

RESUMEN: La  universidad de la educación al aire libre (UG), su plan estratégico será ayudar en el logro de su visión de convertirse en un centro universitario de investigación de clase mundial. Se espera que el plan estratégico  guie la universidad en la creación de estructuras que le permitan ampliar. Hablando sobre el plan en una ceremonia de lanzamiento en Accra, el profesor Cefas Omenyo, Rector de la Facultad de Educación dijo que una gran cantidad de esfuerzos se había invertido en el desarrollo del plan, que implica una consulta con las partes interesadas. Dijo que el colegio se ha comprometido a crear un entorno favorable que hace que un colegio de educación sea cada vez más relevante para el desarrollo nacional y global a través de  las TIC,  enseñanza de alta calidad y el aprendizaje en la universidad. «El Colegio de Educación está dedicado a la eliminación de las barreras que restringen el acceso y el éxito en los estudios de nivel universitario y para aumentar la igualdad de oportunidades de educación para adultos a nivel nacional a través de nuestro campus principal, centros regionales de aprendizaje y plataformas innovadoras de E-learning,»

The Strategic Plan is expected to guide the College in putting in place structures that would enable it to expand.

Speaking on the plan at a launching ceremony in Accra, Professor Cephas Omenyo, Provost of the College of Education said a lot of efforts had gone into the development of the plan, involving consultation with stakeholders.

He said that the College is committed to create an enabling environment that makes a college of education increasingly relevant to national and global development through cutting-edge ICT-driven high quality teaching and learning within the college.

“The College of Education is dedicated to the removal of barriers that restrict access to and success in university level studies and to increase the equality of educational opportunities for adults nationwide through our main campus, regional learning centres and innovative E-learning platforms,” he stated,

This would provide flexible and accessible opportunities for students constrained by personal circumstances, geography, finances or career and family obligations.

Prof Omenyo said the College’s new vision is to become a world-class ICT driven research-intensive college and called on stakeholders to join hands to achieve the vision.

The strategic plan is based on 10 priority areas.

These include: establishing a conducive environment for development and promotion of research, promoting academic excellence using state of the art technology in teaching and learning, promoting innovation, effective collaboration and participation among internal stakeholders, increasing student enrolment and improving faculty recruitment and promoting diversity and gender equity in the College.

Other priority areas are enhancing governance arrangements, financial planning and process management, asset acquisition and management, leveraging information and communication technology, monitoring and evaluation and building external linkages.

Prof Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, who chaired the launch said the plan by the College, signals to the world that the academic entity is changing and is not held hostage to old disciplines but anxious and ready to reform its structures and bring in new things.

He said in order to show that the university is into doing new things as well as old things in new ways, the College is expected to, as much as possible, use new technologies in delivering its mandate.

“It is my hope that with this new emphasis, this university will be seen in the years to come as the most modern, most up-to-date and most relevant in terms of meeting the needs of students and the wider community,” he stated.

Mr Felix Nyarko-Pong, Chairman of the College Advisory Board and Chief Executive Officer of Unibank Ghana Limited, who launched the Strategic Plan pledged the commitment of the board and management to guide the College to achieve the goals set out.

Reverend Dr Joyce Aryee, a member of the Advisory board also launched the College’s cloth, which she noted, is very important as it gives the college an identity unique to it.
