Teach For America alum Jessica Valerio (Chicago ’11) is working with a team of talented educators to create a new KIPP middle school on the West Side of Chicago.
“This year, 180 fifth- and sixth-grade students will join a new KIPP campus dedicated to empowering students with the character and academic skills necessary to persist through college, pursue their passions with confidence, and lead for a more just Chicago,” Ms. Valerio says.
Her students—whom she describes as “thirsty to learn and discover new opportunities”—will participate in a rigorous novel-study curriculum over the course of the school year. Ms. Valerio has turned to DonorsChoose.org to raise funds to purchase over 250 books so that all incoming students can receive their own copies of each of the four novels they will study.
“Having their own copies of Joey Pigza, Jesse Owens: Gold Medal Hero, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Skin I’m In,” she says, “will create a new kind of investment and pride in their text; allow them to develop note-taking and annotation skills necessary in high school and college; and [enable them] to complete assignments outside of the classroom.”
Please consider giving to Ms. Valerio’s project today—and thank you, as always, for supporting teachers and the kids they serve.
