Masaka — For the last nine years, Zzimwe COPE Primary School in Kyanamukaaka Sub-county, Masaka District has been operating as a Universal Primary Education school, with only 20 desks and five office tables.
Located in Bukoto Central constituency, represented by the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, the school has one permanent classroom block and the remaining structures are makeshifts carved out of papyrus, reeds, and banana fibers together with dry banana leaves.
«As we headed for elections earlier this year, the Vice President donated to us two tarpaulins which we used to roof those makeshifts and we are grateful to him. But we need more,» the head teacher, Mr Kitamirike Settabi, told Daily Monitor in an interview on Tuesday.
When Daily Monitor visited the school, it was observed that the four lower classes share the two rooms on the only permanent building available. Other classes are housed in makeshift structures.
Primary One and Two share one classroom, while Primary Three and Four share the other classroom. While Primary One class faces the window on the right hand side of the room where a temporary blackboard is placed, Primary Two class faces the main blackboard and the same arrangement is made for the other two classes.
«It is really disturbing because my colleague in Primary Two will have to keep quiet as I make a statement and I will have to do the same when she is teaching her pupils,» Ms Bena Namukasa, a Primary One teacher, said. She said , if teachers from both classes decide to teach at the same time, pupils from either sides would not concentrate at all.
«When I was posted to this school at the beginning of the year, I was forced to take pictures of how it looks like and show them to every administrator. Apart from the office desks we received last week, nothing much has been done,» Mr Kitamirike said.
VP Ssekandi’s aide, Mr Kizito Kawonawo, said his boss was fully aware of the frustrating state.
